2731 Prospect Contemporary Art permanently closed on April 22, 2017
Stages is Kristen Cliffel’s first solo exhibition at 2731 Prospect. Kristen is well-known for her distinctive work in narrative ceramic sculpture. Her work masterfully meshes issues involving female domesticity and the comforts of home with darkly dramatic fairy tales and archetypal myths. By distilling events and feelings into visual metaphors, Kristen investigates the complex layers lurking behind seemingly simple, yet integral relationships. Through her masterful technical skills as a sculptor working in ceramics, she fully engages the medium’s richly expressive and seductive surface appeal and hefty volume to its fullest extent with dramatic results that mix tragedy, humor and beauty.
Kristen Cliffel’s work is featured in many public and private collections including the Akron Museum of Art; Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, AR; the Weisman Museum of Art at the University of Minnesota; John Michael Kohler Company in Sheboygan, WI; Cleveland Clinic; and Cleveland’s Metro Hospital amongst others. Kristen has been a visiting artist at many colleges and universities, including Cleveland Institute of Art, Kent State University and Savannah College of Art and Design. Additionally, Kristen has completed residencies at The Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada and the Kohler Company in Wisconsin.
Kristen received the prestigious Cleveland Art Prize in 2016. She has also received a Creative Workforce Fellowship, an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship and has been a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant Nominee. She earned her BFA in Ceramics from Cleveland Institute of Art.
